Buying Your First Scooter

Buying Your First Scooter

With the rising costs of petrol more and more people are choosing to buy a scooter rather than buying a new car.  The fact that they are cheap to run isn’t the only reason to buy a scooter in the city they are easier to navigate through traffic, you can park them almost anywhere, and let’s admit it they are fun to drive.  Buying your first scooter should be exciting, but at the same time you have to use caution to make sure you are getting your money’s worth.  Here are some other things you need to consider too.

Traffic in Your Area

Scooters are ideal for city traffic however they aren’t suitable for the M1.  While scooters bigger than 150cc can achieve speeds of up to 60mph it won’t be the most comfortable ride.  That brings us to the next point, are you traveling on long journeys or just back and forth to work.  If you want to buy a Vespa or something similar to it, it doesn’t offer much in the way of wind protection nor are they very comfortable on a long journey.  Instead look for a scooter with more comfortable seating and a bit of wind protection.

Your Experience

If you have experience riding a scooter then you are probably just looking for a good deal on a scooter that will do what you need it to.  But if you are planning on learning to drive with your new scooter then you might want to start out with a smaller scooter until you have the experience to ride one with a bigger engine.  Even the smaller scooters are pretty agile and take off faster than you expect.

New or Used

You can find some really good deals on a used scooter as long as the original owner made sure to take good care of it.  You want to make sure they did regular maintenance and servicing.  Budget is always a factor and many buy scooters because they are a cheap method of transportation, used scooters can be found for just a couple of hundred pounds.

If you have never owned a scooter before then you should probably take someone with you with some experience.  You can also check online forums to see if there are any common issues with the models that you are looking at.  If this is going to be your primary method of transportation then you want to make sure that you are getting something that is mechanically sound.
